Two Dogmas of Belief Revision
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper attacks the widely held view that belief revison theories, as they have been studied in the past two decades, are founded on the Principle of Informational Economy. The principle comes in two versions. According to the rst, an agent should, when accepting a new piece of information, aim at a minimal change of his previously held beliefs. If there are di erent ways to e ect the belief change, then the agent should, according to he second version, give up those beliefs that are least entrenched. Although widely proclaimed by belief revision theorists, I argue that both versions of the principle are dogmas that are not (and perhaps should not be) adhered to. I substantiate this claim with two simple mathematical observations, and I defend it against four possible objections that involve contractions, reconstructions, dispositions, and truths.

The Dangerous Dogmas of Software Engineering
To legitimize itself as a scientific discipline, the software engineering academic community must let go of its non-empirical dogmas. A dogma is belief held regardless of evidence. This paper analyzes the nature and detrimental effects of four software engineering dogmas – 1) the belief that software has “requirements”; 2) the division of software engineering tasks into analysis, design, coding...

متن کاملTWO-DIMENSIONAL BELIEF CHANGE An Advertisement
In this paper I compare two different the models of two-dimensional belief change, namely ‘revision by comparison’ (Fermé and Rott, Artificial Intelligence 157, 2004) and ‘bounded revision’ (Rott, in Hommage à Wlodek, Uppsala 2007). These revision operations are two-dimensional in the sense that they take as arguments pairs consisting of an input sentence and a reference sentence. Two-dimension...

Abstract: The purpose of the present study is two-dimensional. First, provide more evidence of the effects of information order on auditors' beliefs, and secondly, examine whether auditors vary their beliefs in different cognitive styles. These goals were achieved through the use of experienced professional auditors. To determine the effects of information sequence, Hogarth and Einhorn’s belie...
متن کاملMutual Belief Revision: Semantics and Computation
This paper presents both a semantic and a computational model for multi-agent belief revision. We show that these two models are equivalent but serve different purposes. The semantic model displays the intuition and construction of the belief revision operation in multi-agent environments, especially in case of just two agents. The logical properties of this model provide strong justifications ...
